What Is “To Be”?
“To Be” (“Be-Verb” in some countries) is probably the most important verb in English. Students learn this verb first. (The second verb most students learn is “To Have.”)
In fact, “be,” “is,” and “are” are all in the top 100 words used in movies.
Thus, it is very important to learn this verb and use it correctly; it makes communication effective, helps the listener understand to whom the speaker is referring, and makes it clear if you are using statements or questions.
The Grammar

Take Note!
- One person or thing is always the same as “he/she/it,” so you use “is.” Ex: The woman is a teacher.
- Two people or things are the same as “they,” so use “are.” Ex: The books are at the library.
- “You and I,” “she and I,” etc. are the same as “we,” so you use “are.” Ex: He and I are brothers.
